Eyebrow Wars

Dear Diary,

I have unwanted guests in my eyebrows. No, I am not referring to bugs in case that’s what you were thinking. I am talking about a couple of dazzlingly silver highlights nestled amongst the brunette residents. Gray hairs sprouting in my eyebrows!

I have become accustomed to dealing with gray hairs on my head because I have been genetically endowed with an early graying gene. I discovered my first gray head hairs when I was at the tender age of twenty four. I took action with that dilemma by first highlighting my hair and then eventually moving on to full color. I vividly remember the day that I decided to go to full color. I was working out at the gym and a muscle-guy that I would occasionally chat with asked me if the white in my hair was there on purpose. This, of course, is up there with a guy asking a heavyset woman if she is pregnant. Ok. Time to step into full color.

But stray white eyebrow hairs…what does one do to stanch this flow?

I have never been much of an eyebrow plucker. I have always been partial to the Brooke Shields eyebrow look myself. I’m not saying it works for everyone, but I have embraced this style as my own.

I have never even touched an eyebrow pencil. I used to wonder why some women preferred to pluck all of their eyebrows out and then use a pencil to draw them back in. It could be just a style preference, but could multiplying white eyebrow hairs also be a reason?

The first weapon in this war is a pair of tweezers. How hard could that be? Pluck, pluck, done. Right? I don’t know if you have had this experience, but I think those white suckers try to hide and cling to the unsuspecting brown ones. I yanked out way too many of the innocent rightfully colored hairs in my ferocious attempt to rid myself of the white intruders.  I even resorted to trying to trim them away with cuticle scissors. One of my eyebrows looks a little scant, (Please see illustration below) but it could be worse. I will have to approach this a bit more calmly next time. Because, there will be a next time, as you know.

What do you do when the evil white hairs start bringing their friends to invade your eyebrows? Do you use box hair color to cover them up? Or  pluck them until there is nothing left? Or wear long bangs for the rest of your days? Or just accept your lot in life and let them take over as they will? Such is the battle I shall be facing in my future. If you ever see me with painted on eyebrows you will know that I have lost the war.

  1. I have some eyebrow issues, too. I once rocked the Brooke Shields look, and now, I am saving what I can, even the white ones, for fear of them thinning any more. I know a woman who had eyebrows tattooed on, and I can’t see me resorting to that, but help, I want my eyebrows back. And I want them one color, please, preferably not white or clear.

  2. If you pluck the white ones, don’t three replace the one? Isn’t that one of those old wives tales? I don’t know, my friend. I think I would rather see white hairs than the pencil.
    Good luck in your battle.

  3. Oh this has me in the floor. I’m not laughing at you, but at the fact I have been going through it for years now. I’m so tired of plucking pluck plucking. Like chicken scratching at the ground, but do they get anywhere. Sigh. Hair growing everywhere else but where it should be. My war is almost over- me 0 hairs 100+

    Love your blog…

  4. Oh boy, is this familiar. Yep, I’m plucked like a chicken some days. Sigh. @E. Stelling, I hear you. I’m at the stage where hair grows everywhere but where it is supposed to. Hair in my ears? WTH is that about????

  5. Funny! LOL:)when pulling my hair back some white hairs have started sticking out. No sign of white hair on eye brows yet. I never really cared for very thin tweezed eyebrows..& what about hair that comes on your chin??? what a pain..oh well..we just keep it moving:)

  6. Oh no, try eyebrow threading perhaps? Stop plucking; just makes it worse!

  7. Too funny! I’m now 45 and nary a silver or white has suddenly appeared.. at least not in the eyebrow area! The rogue whisker perhaps… but that’s another matter entirely! I do occasionally get my eyebros waxed… not too thin.. but to save me from those that have a mind of their own. The brazen woman actually asked me if I wanted my moustache done at the same time! What moustache? It sent me into rather a dither and promptly propelled me to take a survey of passersby to see if they could see what I did not. Thank heavens! I was pleased with the results!

  8. FYI – On becoming a professional Santa Claus five years ago, I was faced with the reverse dilemma. While I have full dark eyebrows, many clients wanted my brows to match my snowy white hair and beard. The solution? I now bleach my brows once or twice a month to keep them bright white. (Shhhh. Don’t tell the kids.)

  9. Yay! Santa has stopped by my blog! 🙂 So if you can bleach those things, I should be able to darken them if they get too crazy. Good to know. What an excellent job you have!

  10. You could get them tinted as and when. I get mine waxed but got no grey ones..yet, although I have some on my head which I will probably colour soon. Nice story though! Hope it works out for you!

  11. I am very good at denial. Bad hair day? Pretend it looks great. White wild eyebrows? I get the brows waxed and pretend they magically went away. Works for me!

Embrace the grays. They’re merely tokens ofvthr daily wars we fight.
